From the “Deutsches Haus” to the “Hanse Kogge"
The history of the building
The “Deutsches Haus” (German House) hotel was built in 1905 with mortgages from a building contractor and a master miller from Zinnowitz. This hotel had ten rooms with 18 beds for overnight guests. However, compulsory auction was ordered as early as 1909. Hotel owner Albert Holtz from Zinnowitz took over in 1910. In 1913 the hotel was taken over by the hotel owner Guzmann from Koserow. Another compulsory auction was ordered in May 1917. After the First World War, the hotel was acquired by Richard Schmidt, who had taken on several mortgages over the property since 1913. Richard Schmidt, whose wife Luise later ran the neighbouring Hotel Charlottenhof, operated the hotel until 1932. Society balls and artistes’ concerts took place weekly during the season. Eventually, the restaurant became too small for these events. In 1929, an extension with a large hall that could accommodate up to 200 people was added. The Greifswald District Building Society became the new owner
after another compulsory auction in 1932. The widow Mrs. Agnes Brodhagen ran the hotel until 1936. In 1934 the hotel enjoyed a total of 528 overnight stays. In 1936, maître d’ Paul Walther and his wife Erna each bought half of the hotel and operated it successfully until February 1953. Paul Walter was expropriated without compensation for alleged economic crimes As part of the GDR’s “Action Rose”. Paul Walther’s assets were now transferred into the ownership of the people held by the asset management arm of the Free German Trade Union Federation (FDGB) as the legal entity. The FDGB Holiday Service managed the holiday home from 1953 to 1990. The building served as the seat of the administration of the FDGB holiday service, Koserow property, until 1982. The “Central” holiday home, as it was called from 1974 until the fall of the Berlin Wall, was used exclusively as a catering facility for 800 holidaymakers who lodged in private accommodation.
